Stephanie Edwards (born November 5, 1987 in Germany) is an African American singer/songwriter and was the eleventh-place finalist on the sixth (6th) season of American Idol. Stephanie hails from Savannah, Georgia and first began singing around the age of two or three. After graduating from Windsor Forest High School, in Savannah, Edwards pursued vocal instruction for a month and then went on to appear at the Apollo Theatre in New York. During her appearance at the Apollo, as part of the "It's Showtime at the Apollo" show, she began to garner recognition as a talented vocalist. Stephanie utilized her success at the Apollo to win several singing contests, including "Savannah Star" in 2005.
In 2006, at the behest of her parents, Steven and Dewanda Edwards, Stephanie auditioned for the American Idol television program. Although she won the title of Savannah Star in her home state of Georgia, due to her busy schedule as a college freshman, at Armstrong Atlantic State University, in Savannah, GA, she considered skipping the American Idol auditions. Stephanie auditioned for the reality show, American Idol, in Memphis, Tennessee. She is the only one of the Top 12 contestants on American Idol not presented in the TV tryouts preceding the naming of the Top 24 semi-finalists.
During the initial broadcast for the Top 24, Stephanie was praised for her rendition of “How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore,” by Prince. For her second semi-final performance, Edwards attempted the song “Dangerously in Love,” to which Randy Jackson exclaimed that she "sang her face off". The following week, Stephanie pulled off another winning performance with the song "Sweet Thing". According to the judges, she was "darn near flawless and had a good command of the stage."
On March 8, 2007, Stephanie made it into the Top 12. Stephanie performed Diana Ross' song "Love Hangover" during the first theme week of the show. The judges critiqued her arrangement of the song, saying that she teased them with the good part. Despite the criticism, Stephanie secured herself a spot in the Top 11.
Stephanie was eliminated from American Idol on March 21, 2007. After her elimination, Stephanie returned to Savannah, GA, and continued to pursue her degree in Psychology from Armstrong Atlantic State. In the summer of 2008, Stephanie caught the bug to return to show business and partnered with Michael Makinde Productions, a music production and publishing company in Atlanta, GA, to record her debut CD. To date, Stephanie has recorded several powerful singles, including the songs "Let It Ring," "In the Mirror," and "IPOD".
